How To Refinish Teak Furniture

Posted by on Oct 7, 2015 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on How To Refinish Teak Furniture

Teak is a great wood option for indoor or outdoor furniture. Just like any wood though, it can get worn, fade and look a little tired over time. Teak furniture can be refinished to look like new again. It just takes a little time and a handful of tools. See below for helpful tips on how to refinish your indoor or outdoor teak furniture. Here’s What You’ll Need: Good cleaning agent Bucket with warm water Rubber gloves Soft bristle or scrub brush Medium grit sandpaper Paintbrush Teak oil Clear polyurethane Instructions: You need to begin by cleaning your teak furniture. Clean it with a good cleaner along with warm water and your soft bristle brush. Scrub the piece of furniture until you begin to see the original color of the wood show. You’ll be surprised at how great your piece looks after just scrubbing it. Scrub the entire piece thoroughly until the entire piece is all one color. Sand down the wood with the medium grit sandpaper to even out the surface of your furniture. You want to make the surface as even as possible. The furniture needs to be dry before moving on to the next step. The next step requires the oil to saturate into the wood, which cannot be done if the wood is wet. The dry time depends on the piece of furniture, so allow the piece to dry for at least a couple of days. Apply the teak oil to your furniture piece using a paintbrush and your rubber gloves. Be sure to work in a well ventilated area, as the smells can be overwhelming. Apply several coats of the oil to your furniture until you get the color you are looking for. Allow each coat to dry before applying another coat. To keep your furniture looking it’s best for a long time, you’ll need to seal the color and protect the surface by applying a coat of clear polyurethane. You can find this at your local hardware store. Apply it using another brush, and apply it to your furniture in thin coats. Allow the piece to dry thoroughly and cure before using it.  Wood furniture should always be protected in winter weather. Be sure to cover or store it during the cold winter months to keep your teak furniture looking it’s best. If it becomes dull and faded again, you can repeat the steps above again to give your furniture new life. For more information, contact Teak Barn or a similar...

Create A Stylish Montessori Child’s Room

Posted by on Sep 8, 2015 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Create A Stylish Montessori Child’s Room

The Montessori style of schooling focuses on child development with the tenets of freedom and independence. The Montessori approach is different than traditional schooling, as children are given the chance to learn and understand at their own pace, rather than having to follow a curriculum with little choice in activity. Typically, Montessori learning is carried over into the home, including the setup of the bedroom. Here are some ways to create a stylish Montessori theme inside of a child’s bedroom.   Find short, easy-to-access dressers The Montessori school theory says that all items inside of the child’s room should be within reach for them. This means that dressers and clothing storage must be at the child’s level. Instead of going with the traditional dresser, find small dressers or nightstands to place your child’s belongings. Nightstands and short bookcases work well for holding clothing and toys. Both nightstand dressers and small bookcases are easy to open and accessible for those who are still short in stature with smaller arms. This offers children the independence that the Montessori approach praises.   Upholster a bed frame and platform bed The Montessori approach for room creation dictates that the child’s bed be directly on the floor. This is a concern for many parents, as mattresses can mold at the bottom when left in this manner. Placing your child on a floor bed with the mattress against the all also means they could hit their head. If you want to create a Montessori room without the problems, consider a fabric bed frame and a platform bed. Platform beds can be only a few inches off the ground, but can preserve the health of the mattress. You can upholster an old bed frame or select a brand new fabric platform bed. Set up a tiny vanity area Learning to care for one’s self and work self-sufficiently is a tenet of Montessori that can help your child flourish later in life. Inside of your child’s room, set up a vanity area with a mirror and vanity desk that can hold items such as hair care, towels, and brushes. Browse furniture store that specialize in fine furnishings for a quality vanity. A high-quality vanity is something that your child can grow up with and will always be the area they can associate with self-respect and self-love. Growing up Montessori can instill a sense of pride and self-discovery, especially with a well thought out room plan.  For more information, go to websites to research your furniture...

A Pipe Busted! Know What Services You Need To Handle The Problem

Posted by on Aug 11, 2015 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on A Pipe Busted! Know What Services You Need To Handle The Problem

After a pipe busts, you will have water in your home that has to come out. To handle this disaster, you need to know which services help you get rid of the water so you can reduce the amount of damage that you must repair. Remove the Standing Water After you turn the water off in your home, you need to get rid of the standing water by hiring a water restoration company. To remove the standing water, the company will typically use a long hose that is attached to a high-powered vacuum. This piece of equipment is an industrial version of a wet vacuum cleaner. The difference between a standard and industrial vacuum is that the industrial one can collect larger amounts of water. The company pumps the excess water out of your home and into tanks, which they dispose of later. Find the Excess Water Unfortunately, some of the water may have soaked into your belongings, gotten behind the drywall or seeped into and under your flooring. It is essential that any water you cannot see be found so that the excess moisture does not allow mold and mildew to grow. A water restoration company will first remove your belongs from the room where the water was at and then they usually place them in your garage or yard so they can start to air dry. Then they use a thermal imaging camera to spot any hidden water. The water is going to be cooler than the surrounding materials, which helps the technicians find the water pockets that are inside your walls or below your flooring. Drying the Space The drying process is different for each item affected by the water. Generally, your belongings such as books, furniture and clothing will air dry. In some cases, the company will also use fans to help the process move along quicker. Inside your home, the company will use fans to circulate the air, alongside dehumidifiers. The dehumidifiers will pull moisture out of the air so it will not reattach to anything inside the room. In some situations, heaters are used as well to speed up the drying process. However, if the space you are drying has hardwood flooring, this step may be avoided, since the higher temperatures can cause the wood to warp. Repair the Space Next, you need to have a plumber repair the pipe. After the pipe is fixed, the water restoration company can help you repair your walls and floors if needed. The technicians can help replace drywall and flooring, since some of these items may need to be removed to dry out the space thoroughly. Additionally, some companies even offer painting and tile services as part of their restoration process as well. So if a pipe has just burst, it is easy to see that calling a professional restoration company, such as disaster restoration ServiceMaster Of Lethbridge, is imperative. Call someone and get help...

Understanding What Causes Iron Water Problems

Posted by on Jul 27, 2015 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Understanding What Causes Iron Water Problems

If you have iron in your water you may encounter different problems. Your trouble may be as minor as a slight discoloration in a glass of tap water left to sit on the counter, to ugly orange stains in your sinks and bathtubs. Depending on the severity of your problem, there are ways to remove the iron from your water. But, before you can decide on what method to use, you need to understand what might be causing your iron water problem.  Determine the Cause There are essentially three different types of iron contamination in water. Each requires a different treatment process, so your first step in getting rid of the iron problem will be to have your water tested. While there are do-it-yourself kits available, it is recommended you have a professional test your water, especially if your trouble involves heavy iron staining. Your test results are going to yield one or more of three primary iron related issues. Clear water Iron, or Ferrous Iron Red water Iron, or Ferric Iron Bacterial Iron Clear water iron is the most noticeable of the three. Ferrous iron will produce particles in a glass of water that will turn red if left to sit for a few moments then settles to the bottom of the glass. Clear water iron usually does not cause problems with plumbing and other fixtures like the other types do, but it can create mild health concerns if the level of iron is excessively high. Both red water iron and bacterial iron are similar. You will notice Ferric iron immediately as a reddish-yellow tint in your water. Although the coloring of the water is partly due to a bacterial reaction caused by the water being exposed to air, actual bacterial iron comes from the iron in your water reacting to various acids. This chemical reaction in bacterial iron not only creates reddish water, but also makes the water slimy to the touch. One quick test to determine if you have a bacterial iron problem is to inspect the insides of your toilet bowls. A reddish slime inside your toilet’s water tank is a sure sign you have a serious bacterial iron problem. While all types of iron water will cause problems, red water and bacterial iron will be the most costly. Bacterial iron can damage household water fixtures and slowly clog water lines, plus ruin bathtubs and sinks. Use Your Test Results A complete water test will find out the extent of the problem, allowing you to consider possible solutions. This test will include measurements for iron concentration, iron bacteria, pH, alkalinity, and water hardness. By contacting a water treatment professional, you will be able to definitively determine the type of iron problem you have. By using these test results, you will then be able to assess the severity of your issue and make a decision on how to fix the problem. To learn more, contact a company like Bonnyville Water...

Quality insulation plays an important role in ensuring that a home stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. With so many different types of insulation available on the market today, you may be having difficulty deciding which product is best for your home. If you are thinking of installing new insulation, opting to use spray foam insulation can add value to your home. Here are three ways the spray foam insulation can actually help make your home more desirable to potential buyers in the future. 1. Spray foam insulation is energy efficient. Most people want to reduce the amount of money they spend on energy costs each year. As buyers look for a new home, they will likely ask how much utility costs are. These costs can factor into a buyer’s purchasing decision, so having spray foam insulation in your home could help make it more attractive to a potential buyer. Spray foam insulation has been shows to reduce energy bills by up to 50%, which means big savings for future buyers. 2. Spray foam insulation helps reduce noise. If you can reduce the amount of noise pollution plaguing your home, buyers will take notice. Spray foam insulation creates an airtight seal once it has been applied. This prevents exterior noise from entering your home. As an added bonus, you can also reduce the amount of interior noise you hear in your home after installing spray foam installation. Plumbing noises can be significantly reduced, making spray foam insulation an excellent choice for older homes with loud pipes. 3. Spray foam insulation adds structural integrity. Keep The Ants Outside Of Your House

Posted by on Jun 9, 2015 in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Keep The Ants Outside Of Your House

If you experienced an ant problem last year inside of your house, you can help keep the ants outside this summer by taking a few precautionary measures. Trim The Bushes & Pull The Weeds Near Your House The first thing you can do to keep ants and other insects out of your house is to take care of the landscaping that is near your house. Trim back any bushes that brush up against your house and pull up any weeds that are right near your house. These bushes and weeds can help ants navigate their way into your home. Depending on the types of ants you encountered last year, they may even feed on this natural vegetation. Create A Defensive Perimeter Around Your House If you really want to keep the ants out of your house, you need to set up a defense system. After you have trimmed back the bushes and weeds that are near your house, take two parts cornmeal and mix it with one part granulated sugar. Take this cornmeal and granulated sugar mixture and sprinkle it around the perimeter of your house. If you don’t want to use cornmeal or don’t have any around, you can also use borax to make this mixture. The sugar helps attract the ants to the cornmeal and the borax. Both cornmeal and borax kill ants in two different ways. When the cornmeal is mixed with water, it basically causes the ants to explode. On the other hand, the borax just kills the ants when it is ingested. It is better to set up a perimeter with “food” that the ants can take back to their colony. That way the entire colony will be killed. If you spray a pesticide around your house, it may keep the ants away from your house temporarily, but it will not kill the colony. Creating a defensive perimeter using the ingredients listed above is the most effective way to keep ants out of your house. Seal Off The Inside Of Your House Finally, you need to seal off the inside of your house. Ants make their way into your house through every little crack and opening they can find. They love to crawl under that open space below your door, or that little gap between your screen and your window. They even like to crawl through old cable line holes and vents. By trimming back bushes and weeds from your house, creating a natural defensive perimeter and sealing up little ant-sized entryways into your house, you can prevent ants from taking over your house this summer. If you need more tips on keeping ants or any other pests out of your house, contact a local pest control company like 360 Wildlife...

3 Tips for Cleaning Your Mini Blinds

Posted by on May 12, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Your mini blinds might dress up your windows and help block the sun out, but they can still be a major source of irritation. Mini blinds attract dust like crazy and can be a pain to clean, but there are some things that you can do to make cleaning easier. These are a few helpful tips for cleaning your mini blinds. 1. Use a Dryer Sheet for Regular Dusting If you’re like many people, you might automatically reach for your feather duster or a microfiber cloth when dusting your blinds. However, an even better option is a clean dryer sheet. A dryer sheet will help attract dust like a magnet, and you won’t have to worry about it leaving any lint behind. Plus, you can just toss it in the garbage once it gets dusty and dirty. Another perk is that it will leave your mini blinds smelling great, which is a great way to add a light scent to your home without it being too overwhelming. 2. Try a Sock If you don’t have any dryer sheets on hand or would prefer a non-disposable option, try dusting your blinds with an old sock. Simply put the sock on your hand — much like if you were making a sock puppet — and swipe your hand over each slat of your blinds You’ll be grabbing all of the dust and dirt in your hand, so you can dump it in the garbage can as needed. It’s a super easy option for dusting, especially if your blinds have gotten a little bit out of control. 3. Use an Outdoor Wading Pool If you have an old baby pool lying around, or if you can find a good deal on one at a local discount store, consider using it to clean your mini blinds. You can soak your mini blinds in a solution of water and vinegar or water and bleach; then, hang them on a clothesline or on the back of one of your patio chairs, and spray them clean with a water hose. This is a great way to keep the mess contained outdoors while getting your mini blinds sparkling clean. Mini blinds can be a major pain to keep clean, but they don’t have to be. If you implement these three tips in your home, you’re sure to find that keeping them clean is much easier than you thought it could be. Click here for more information on...

Dirty Carpet? Here Are Some Tips On How Often To Get Deep Carpet Cleaning

Posted by on Apr 17, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Do you wait until company is coming to clean your carpets? Or maybe you don’t think of calling the carpet cleaner until you move the sofa and notice the carpet underneath is softer and a much lighter shade than the rest of your carpet that is dirty and stiff. If that sounds like you, you’re probably waiting far too long between deep cleanings. Your carpet not only looks better, but it lasts longer when you clean it regularly. Here are some things to consider when trying to figure out how often to have your carpets cleaned: Members Of Your Household If you have active kids that play sports or spend a lot of time outdoors, they probably track in a lot of sand, dirt, and other debris. Therefore, you’ll need to have your carpets cleaned more often than you would if you lived alone and always removed your shoes as soon as you entered the door. Also, if you have toddlers or small children who spend a lot of time on the floor, you’ll want to clean your carpets often, so you don’t have to worry about them picking up germs, dirt, or pet hairs. You might also want to consider the occupations and hobbies of the adults living in your home too. If someone works in construction or around soil, you’ll probably notice the high traffic areas of your carpet get dirty pretty fast due to dirty work shoes. Also, if you have a smoker in your home, the carpet will hold onto smoke odors, and you’ll probably need to clean your carpet more often, just to keep it smelling fresh. Recommendation Of Manufacturer Your carpet may come with a recommendation from the manufacturer to clean it on a set schedule. However, that is a general guideline to follow, and you need to adjust it to match your lifestyle. Cleaning is good for carpets because it removes grit and dirt that wears down the fibers. Therefore, cleaning more often than recommended is often a good idea when you have an active household. While you may need to adjust the frequency of carpet cleaning, you should still follow the manufacturer’s guidelines when it comes to the recommended cleaning method and solutions to use. Presence Of Pets Pets spend a lot of time on the floor, and your carpet will begin to smell like your dog or cat after a while. Plus, the loops will collect hairs and maybe even fleas. If you have a sick animal or one that isn’t house trained, you’ll have other messes to contend with too. Urine odor can be difficult to get rid of unless you have your carpet professionally cleaned. Allergy Sufferer In The House Carpets can make life harder when you have allergies. That’s because they collect dust and dust mites along with pet dander and pollen. A carpet full of allergens can make your symptoms flare up every time you walk in the door. The best way to control the problem is to vacuum daily and deep clean the carpets frequently. A general rule of thumb is to have your carpeting cleaned about once per year unless it gets excessive wear. If you have pets, smoke, or have allergies, you may want to have them cleaned as often as every three...

Learn How To Hang Blinds On Your Large Glass Doors

Posted by on Apr 1, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Having wooden doors with large glass panels in your home creates a very elegant look. An issue that arises with these types of doors is finding a way to shade some of the light that shines through the glass. The light can often be very bright and may overpower a space. Drapes are often hung over doorways and can make it quite difficult to open and shut the doors. Instead, learn how to attach blinds directly to your door with the following guide to create a seamless and useful look. Measure The Glass Panels The first thing you need to do is measure the glass panels on the door. You want the blinds to completely cover all of the glass on the door, so taking measurements is the only way you can be sure that you are able to get the right size blinds for the job. Be sure to measure the length and width of the door to ensure the blinds you order are as long and wide as you need them to be. Buy And Prepare The Binds Next, go to a home improvement store and buy blinds that are the right size for the area you want to cover. Take all of the parts out of the package and lay them out on a table so that you can easily find the parts you need when you need them. Hang The Brackets Use a pen and a measuring tape to measure and mark one inch above the top area of the glass panels on both ends of the glass. Take a drill and drill holes into the area where the bracket needs to be placed. Drilling the holes first allows you to be sure that your screws go into the wall exactly where you want them to go. Hold the bracket in place, place a screw in the small hole that will attach it to the wall, and use the screwdriver to attach the screw to the door. Hang The Blinds The side of the bracket that is facing you will be open. Simply slip the edge of the blind into the brackets and pace the small door over the edge of the bracket to hold the blind in place so that it doesn’t fall out as you open and close the door. There will be a small clip that is included in the blind packaging that needs to be attached to the bottom center of the door. The bottom of the blind will slip into the clip to prevent it from slamming back and forth against the door as it opens and...

Remodeling Your Bathroom: Choosing The Right Faucet For You

Posted by on Mar 5, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

When you decide to remodel your bathroom, you want to create a space that feels luxurious and comfortable. You also want a bathroom space that is unique and reflects a little bit of your personality. This can be a tall order, considering how plain and mundane some bathroom design elements can be. When planning your bathroom remodel, consider the fact that there are unique and innovative options available for every element of your project, even the bathroom faucets. Get to know a few ideas for unique and unexpected bathroom faucet options so that you can customize your sink to your needs and tastes. Give Minimalism a Try If you have grown tired of the bulky bathroom sink faucets, fear not, for there are other options out there. In recent years, particularly in European design, minimalism has become all the rage for kitchens and bathrooms alike. This is truer in plumbing fixtures than anything else. A thin, straight or arched faucet protrudes directly from the wall or from next to the sink basin to provide you with the water you need without the muss and fuss of bulky faucets and handles. As an added bonus you can also select smaller faucets that conserve water as well, controlling the flow of water and cutting down on your usage. Turn Your Faucet into a Functioning Piece of Art On the other hand, if you find minimalism to be boring and constrictive, there are other unique bathroom faucets available to you. Designers and artists throughout the world are always looking for ways to make the mundane beautiful, including the bathroom faucet. Look for local or individually-owned companies rather than larger chain companies that lean toward a standardized product offering.  Bathroom faucets can be made to look like abstract art, with loops and curves that funnel the water into a waterfall before it finds its way to your sink. Other faucets incorporate romantic crystal designs to add opulence and glamour to your bathroom faucet. And still others are rustic, designed to look like the faucet itself was carved out of a tree felled in the forest by your own two hands. No matter what your style may be, there are bathroom faucets that are artistic and uniquely designed that can match your needs. And if you cannot find what you like from these individually-owned companies, you can ask them to make you a custom piece designed collaboratively with the artist. Then you are guaranteed a one-of-a-kind work of art as your bathroom faucet.  As you can see, there are options available to you to make even the most seemingly mundane element of your remodeling project into a focal point and a conversation piece. Make sure that when you do choose one of these unique bathroom faucets that you hire a professional contractor to install it. These non-standard faucets may need special fixtures and attachments to your existing plumbing to work at their best. So, consider your options and begin the search for the bathroom faucet that can make your bathroom unique and truly your own. For more information, look for a company that specializes in bathroom remodeling in...
